| posted: 1/28/2005 at 8:57:33 AM ET Ok I can't do the full update right now cuz too many things to do at work, but just wanted to say it was a fabulous concert with a variety of songs that I thoroughly enjoyed. I waited by the stage door along with a small group of people and Bernadette was as gracious as ever with everyone. I will share more later on when I don't have a full to do list sitting in front of me on my desk.

| posted: 1/28/2005 at 8:21:08 PM ET Let me start by saying I wasn't trying to tease, but I teach middle school Spanish and somehow I just couldn't make the connection between Bernadette and my subject area today (and grades are do on Monday!) I hope this lives up to what you were waiting for...
Ok The concert was at Ruth Eckerd Hall and might as well been called Ruth Eckerd Retirement Village. This time of year in Florida is known as "Snow bird" time. I think the average age of the audience was in the mid 70's. No offense, just an observation. There were a few younger people there. I am almost 30. We got there around 7:30 and found our row T center seats. I would have liked to have been closer (I was first row at Gypsy and I think around 6 or 7 when I went to her Buffalo
concert), but my view was unobstructed. There was a full orchestra which later in the Show was introduced by Bernadette Her drummer was Cubby, one of the original mouseketeers and of course Marvin Laird was on piano and leading the orchestra. They took to the stage right on time and played an overture of what I guess was what she was going to sing.(Not that good with the guessing part) I was getting excited cuz I did regonize Being Alive, one of my favs. So then the big announcemnet was made and Bernadette took the stage wearing a beautiful thin strapped beige/champagne colored sparkly gown with a slit up the middle and high heels with a single rhinestone strap across the toes. Her hair looked great a bit shorter but as she began to sing, nothing happened. There were some technical difficulties with the microphones and at one point Bernadette joked that it might have to be an acoustic
show. The problems were finally sorted out (the voice from off stage said the AC had been kicked out... whatever that is)
and she began with Let me Entertain You. She then talked a bit to the audience about the next song and how she had been in the show, but had not played the part. I remembered this bit from her Carnegie Hall concert so knew that No One is Alone
was next followed by There's Nothing Like a Dame. Fun and those low notes she hit were great! After that she talked to the audience a bit about her love for legendary singers and said she was singing a new song she'd never done before. The lights
dimmed and she moved towards the piano snapping her fingers in time with the music and then made her way on top of the piano as Marvin played Fever. Next up she talked to the audience again about Andrew Lloyd Webber and the shows he has created and then mentions her role in Song and Dance. I hate to say it but I know the second song was Unexpected Song, but is there one about a letter too or is that just the beginning of Unexpected? Next up Meet me in Paradise followed by talking about the 70's
and Mack and Mabel to the audience. I guess she was kind of joking about that being a long time ago, but I know at least 90% of that audience was nearing retirement in the 70's so she didn't have to worry about them not relating to the time period. She then sang Time Heals Everything. She then introduced Cubby, Marvin and the orchestra, whose name she confused with "toilet". It got a laugh from her and the audience. She then sang the Gentleman is a Dope followed but mention of Richard Rodgers and his collaborations. She then did Some Enchanted Evening followed by talking to the audience about her childhood and the fascination she had with the records her mom had when she was a kid...the "ones to the left" which were breakable and that she loved to sneak and look at their beautiful covers including that of Carrousel. She then did Mr. Snow and the audience really got a kick out of the lyrics. Then she comes to Sondheim and talks about his upcoming 75th bday. She sang Not a Day Goes
By (boy is that powerful song!) Then Faithless Love? (I wasn't familar with that one and that might not be the real title I made that one up)and goes back to the 70's and jokes about marriage and talks about her own (being married 8 years I think she said)which then led into You Could Drive a Person Crazy. Children Will Listen and Being Alive. I had been waiting all night for that one. I just love that song
Now this is where I get sketchy as to what exactly happened. (Up to this point I had been writing down the songs to remember, but I guess I got a bit excited here at the end. She left the stage to a standing ovation and came back just not sure after or before what.) I think it was after Being Alive that she came back and took her shoes off. I thought that was strange til I saw (and she said) her putting her black Momma Rose heels and sweater she throws off during Rose's turn. As she is "getting ready" she tells about being in Gypsy as a child and fulfilling a lifelong dream playing that role. She then went on to do an amazing performance of Rose's Turn which ended with a standing ovation. I thought the show was over, but she then says she didn't want to end the show that way so goes into Irving Berlin's Counting Your Blessings. A man had given her a single rose that she held as she sang her final song. Very sweet calm end to a wonderful show. She received another standing ovation after this. She left the stage and it was over just before 9:30. My mom was very impressed that she sang straight through without a break. It was a fantastic concert that I really enjoyed.
So we then went to wait by the stage door. At first there were only about 5 people, but I think when she finally came out (around 10:30) there were at least 20 or more. She came by and graciously signed the things that people had brought as we all stood behind a fence. She talked to everyone and I (now feel kind of stupid) told
her how much I enjoyed her show and was happy to have not missed this concert as I was scheduled to due to a move out of the country. Then I bumbled some more
about Gypsy and her Buffalo concert I had seen. Her manager even mentioned the concert hall by name. I took a few pics and others were asking to take a pic with her and she said she would after she was done signing. They opened the gate and we all got to take pics with her. (I guess it helps that it was Florida winter) Not only do I think that Bernadette is an amazing performer, but I also think that she's great because I think she genuinely appreciates her fans, which is something that I think other performers often do not seem to care about.
Ok so that is my report. It is a bit long and maybe a bit of stream of consciousness, but I hope it gives some of you a taste of the wonderful show I saw.

I'm so tempted to try and get a ticket to one of these scheduled concerts but I have a feeling she'll be appearing closer to me sometime soon. In the past, whenever I've driven 6-7 hours to see her in concert, she almost always wound up so much closer.
